About Elizabeth Gan
I have been painting for about 12 years. I started out with acrylic paints on canvas and moved between watercolor and acrylics. I have always loved creating artwork of many different mediums from silk painting to woodwork. I have also used my artwork in my children's books (some published). I started doodling one day when I was faced with a great desire to create some artwork and no money or supplies with which to do it with. If I don't create, I feel like I am going to die! I had moved across the world and left everything behind, so I had no art supplies with me! When looking through my suitcase out of desperation for anything to use and also my purse to see how much money I had to buy art supplies, I found a fine tip sharpie pen and a small pad of watercolor paper and began my journey. I sat down and stared doodling on the page with much pain. I was sick with ME and could not hold the pen for a long time without my arm/hand twitching and seizing up with cramps. so I started with a little doodle, flat bang in the center of the page. Usually I am my own worst critic - thinking everything should be perfect otherwise i should not pain/draw it. but i decided to ignore that side of my partly functioning brain that day and just for the fun of it -started doodling. It was completely different then anything else I had done before but needed to just create something new in my new season. I would doodle when i prayed, I would doodle when thinking and when i was listening to music. It helped me to concentrate. It was kind of healing for my mind and body.
My inspirations usually come from my thoughts and prayers. my mind seems to calm down when i start drawing even though i have no idea where i am going with each piece or when i will finish it. I often get stuck, but that comes when i think too much and plan or beat myself up for messing up. I find the most beautiful doodles come out of letting go and just having fun. each one usually takes months to finish in between the lines of life that carry on in the background and i love every minute of it.
I hope you enjoy them.
